Changing over from Standard Re-entrant Ukulele Tuning with its High G string to a Low G ukulele tuning is quite straight forward and easy to do.  There are no new chords to learn, your scales stay the same, and the low g Strings are no harder on your fingers.

ALL ukuleles can be tuned low G, no 'special' ukulele is needed.

What you get with Low G is more notes to play as the lowest note on your uke is now an octave below the standard high g. Imagine a piano keyboard, your high g is pitched above middle C, now with a low g you are pitched below middle C

You also be a much fuller Bass tone from your ukulele, and BEST OF ALL those wonderful Rock Single note riffs now sound authentic.

Aquila's revolutionary new approach — unique to Aquila — changes the specific weight of the material, increasing it progressively to leave the gauge almost unchanged.

A unique feeling and a strong, consistent sound. Until now, it was necessary to increase the gauge of a string for it to produce a lower-pitched note. But increasing the string’s diameter also increases internal dampening. That makes the string less bright, less responsive and more muffled; the thicker the string, the duller the sound.

The result is amazing: instruments sound brighter, more powerful and more responsive through the entire range of the fret board. The strings also maintain their intonation better, because thicker strings need to be fretted harder, pulling them further out of tune.

RED SERIES® sets provide superior performance over traditional strings for musicians who love bright sounds and powerful voicing across the full scale of the instrument.

You never heard a sound like this before, simply because before it did not exist.

WHY ARE THERE DIFFERENT SHADES OF RED?
In the manufacturing process of our Red Series strings we use different percentages of metal powder to optimise each string’s performance within the set. Because of this, the colour varies slightly with each string in a set of Reds.

LOW G TUNING
Density is in fact the secret of quality sound in a low string and Aquila are happy to announce that they managed to overcome this difficult technological challenge (tried by many others but without success).

Now, with Aquilas RED SERIES® strings you can finally tune your ukulele to Low G with the certainty of powerful sound quality and a superior intonation across the frets that is fully integrated with that of the upper treble strings.

MAIN FEATURES
The technical solution adopted was firstly to make the Nylgut elastic and then add  red copper powder in order to increase the density to about twice that of standard white Nylgut.

  • Color: red-brown
  • Surface: slightly rough; this texture has eliminated the squeak that sometime occurs with the Nylgut strings.
  • Elasticity/Elongation: consistent with white Nylgut!
  • Performances: better than the first elastic version! They do not break under tension providing rapid, stable tuning!
  • Intonation: accurate past the 12th fret
  • Pressing the string firmly down on the frets does not cause the note to sharpen.
  • It is  not necessary to file the nut slot wider to accommodate our RED SERIES® string.
  • Density: about twice than standard white Nylgut.

New strings from Italian Premium String maker Aquila Corde Armoniche - Super Nylgut.

Almost every ukulele player knows that Aquila have a  great reputation for their strings.

And I'd say most ukulele enthusiasts seem to agree that fitting a set of Aquilas are first and best way to improve a cheap ukuleles tone.

All the time I recommend to my beginner students that "fitting a set of Aquila Strings to a cheap ukulele will see instant volume and tone improvements that will knock you out.  Well worth the price of fitting a set."

So what makes these strings different than the regular Nylgut strings?
The pearl color is slightly different to the regular Nylgut Strings.

But it is the smoother feel that will impress.

They feel great under your finger tips, and anything that makes your playing easier is good by me, having your finger tips feel better after a long session is a bonus ontop of the fuller tone.

The smother feel also makes for easier string slides and transitions, especially chromatic chordal slides (Blues players are going to love this) and for lead playing the Super Nylegut string is better as you can slide into notes easier.

Aquila also make claim that the Super nylgut strings  "ables to achieve the required pitch and stability in a few seconds".  And a greater acoustic output with a more penetrating sound than regular Nylguts.

The Tone and Volume balance between strings is really good.

I think they sound a little bit "fatter / fuller' sounding than the regular Nylgut Strings.

From the Aquila Site.
SUPERNYLGUT® sets: enjoy your playing with a superb new look and a better sound performance. We are proud to launch the upgraded version of our famous Nylgut® strings: the Supernylgut ukulele string have a charming natural pearl color and a very smooth and polished surface feels like wax.

So pleasant for your eyes and for your fingers!

They are also  less stretchy than any previous Nylgut® version , this resulting in a faster setting to proper tune when new and in a tendency of easily maintaining the intonation when reached. On top of this, Supernylgut is stronger and does not suffer from sharp edges of the nuts, marks from frets or hard nail playing.

And you can get all these upgrades together with the wonderful richness of tone which made our Nylgut® a success! Amazing!

Can you Tune a Baritone Ukulele gCEA standard ukulele tuning?

QUESTION:

Can I Tune My Baritone Ukulele Ukulele Tuning gCEA?

QUICK ANSWER:
"Yes"  you can tune a baritone ukulele like a standard ukulele, but you need the right strings.

Aquila makes the AQ23U set of Baritone scale (length) strings that can be tuned to standard ukulele tuning of gCEA.

BONUS:  FREE Online Ukulele Lesson, Yes you also get a voucher for a 1 on 1 video lesson with an experienced USA based Ukulele Master.

LONG ANSWER:
If you attempt to tune your standard baritone strings up in pitch to Standard ukulele Pitch (5 semitones higher) by simply turning the machine heads to tighten the strings you will most likely start snapping strings and/or pull your bridge off the top of your ukulele.

STOP! Get the Right Strings before you damage your ukulele

TUNING
The standard baritone ukulele strings are lower in pitch than the standard ukulele tuning. They are tuned to DGBE (the same as the top four strings of a guitar). They also differ from the standard ukulele as they are not in re-entrant tuning i.e. the strings go from low to high.

SCALE LENGTH
The Scale length of the baritone is longer than that of a Tenor Ukulele.  The strings are pulled to lower tension and produce notes lower in pitch than a regular ukulele.

CAN'T I JUST RETUNE MY BARITONE STRINGS?
If you attempt to tune your standard baritone strings up in pitch to gCEA you will most likely start snapping strings and/or pull your bridge off the top of your ukulele.

AQUILA GCEA STRINGS AQ23U
Baritone to Tenor tuning Conversion Strings made by Aquila are made specifically to produce notes of gCEA at the correct tension at the baritone scale length. From the treble side to bass side / 1st string to 4th string are about 025 031 038 027 in thousandths of an inch.

The strings are all plain Nylgut material with no wound stings.  Nylgut is a new formulation of polymerized plastic mixed with additives and patented by Aquila.

Aquila Thundergut UBass Strings, Second hand. Off to ebay Auction.

I removed these Aquila Thundergut UBass strings from a UBass for a customer who wanted the Silver Rumblers as part of my included Setup.

I initially, but mistakenly, fitted the Thunderguts, but had to remove them when I discovered my error in the order requirements.

The customer brought back his UBass and I made the string changeover. They have been sitting in my string drawer ever since.

So off to EBAY AUCTION they go so someone can get some pleasure/use out of them.

Try a Baritone Ukulele for More Volume and Aquila gCEA Vs DGBE tuned strings

QUESTION: I need Maximum Ukulele Volume
I got an interesting question via Ebay, someone asking about how to get more volume and what ukulele to go for, interested in Baritone or Resonators.

My Answer: The larger in size you go the more volume you get out of a ukulele because the sound box is bigger and the top is larger. But you get a deeper more rounded mellow sound out of the bigger ukuleles.

So a little Soprano may actually have more "cut through" and be perceived as louder as all the energy is centred in the Mids and Treble range, which we humans hear best.

CHANGE STRINGS TO AQUILA NYLGUT STRINGS:
If your Ukulele is a Starter low end one then fitting a set of the Italian Aquila Strings will increase your volume over the nasty clear fishing line junk that are fitted some starter ukuleles.

RESONATOR MECHANICAL AMPLIFICATION:
If max volume to get heard above the crowd is what is required then the Resonator Ukuleles are the way to go, Banjoleles are still the loudest of the ukuleles, but they sound like, well... banjo.

BARITONE THE BIGGEST UKULELE:
Baritones are the biggest ukuleles and sure enough they are loud, but Baritones are not tuned like a ukulele (Uke = GCEA five steps above guitar). Baritones are tuned like a guitar in same register of DGBE (basically no E or A strings)

BARITONE gCEA STRINGS:
Great new is that Aquila do a set of Ukulele strings for Baritone ukes that convert them to Ukulele tuning in the same 5 steps above register. Normal baritone strings snap if you try and tune them up five steps. So you get that baritones big box volume, but in that higher register of Ukulele.

If you want a set of those Aquila GCEA baritone strings give me an email.

Cheers CC
